We are all aware of the fact that fossil fuel reserves are limited and diminishing with each passing day. Along with that, the use of fossil fuels is harmful for the environment, since they give off carbon dioxide when burned, which causes the greenhouse effect. It is necessary in this day and age to be aware of our carbon footprint and the ways in which we could reduce it. Use of solar energy is an excellent alternative to fossil fuels.
Uthaan is an NGO based in Gurgaon, which works towards the betterment of the environment and society as a whole. They conduct programmes in various fields like animal welfare, women's welfare, herbal plantations, conservation of nonrenewable resources, and environmental awareness. Uthaan is an organization that wants to create awareness in the society towards the urgent need for conservation and animal welfare, and they aim at doing so with the help of schools. Top schools in the neighboring areas are made members, due to which the children can be educated about and made aware about the current conditions of the environment and society, and ways to overcome them right from a young age.
They conduct free demonstrations of various pieces of equipment working on solar power, such as lights, fans, heaters, etc. in schools, explaining the ways in which one could replace the use of conventional fuels with solar power. These demonstrations are conducted as a collaborative activity with the help of the State Department. If the school chooses to install these equipments, they help them in getting subsidized rates from the State Department stores.
Along with the demonstrations, Uthaan has also installed a solar water heater system in a school for deaf and dumb children.
In the near future, Uthaan aims to adopt a Solar Energy Center in the Leisure Valley, which will showcase the scope of solar power. This project will mainly evolve to raise awareness along with providing entertainment for the general public, especially the students, about conservation of energy resources and use of alternative fuels.
